ISOCARP showing Riyadh – a city transforming like no other

In 2025 I attended the ISOCORP conference in Rijadh and had a chance to learn about the many projects and masterplans  that will change this rapidly growing city towards a more resiliant and sustainable city. Plus, more than 1000 participents from all over the world shared their expertise with zillions of presentations, but I was glued to the presentation of Rijad’s bureau for city planning.

Of course many of us came loaded with stereotypes, which mostly have not proven true. Very unusual for a conference on city planinnig almost half of the particpants were women. On top of that. the first time (rather sad) in the history of ISCOCORP , an award for women in planning was given.

The problems Riyad is faced with a numerous. The city is dominanted by cars, which does not come as a surprise in country whose wealth is based on oil. But space is also limited in Riyad, so great effort is put in extending public transport, especially the popular metro.

Another one is dealing with heavy rainfalls, yes that exists in Saudia Arabia. By the way, beginning of December can be really chilly in the evening.

I am was really worried about freezing cold conference rooms, only to find great sitting areas to mingle in a park.

An surprise, surprise, Saudi Arabia has climate goals: to cut CO2 Emission to zero by 2060 and recycle 70% of the water by 2030.

Saudia Arabia wanst to plant 600 millions of trees by 2030, the numbers are mind-buggling and I am more than curious if this is all put into action.

Networking at ISOCORP

Besides the presentation, the main goal of sich a conference is meeting people, connecting and networking. The venue was perfect. Temporary buildings had been put up in a park next the National Museum, all within four days. We were told there was an issues with permits.
