In 2012 Gilles an I visited our friend Sanita in Riga. Sanita had a flat in Riga, but travelled most the time for business. We had meet in Ethiopia, when we were looking for people to share the costs for a jeep and driver to the Omo Valley
Most of the time we spent in Riga exploring the beautifully renovated historical center, the Art Nouveau District, markets and cafes.
Even in 2012 there were lots of tourists, but nothing compared to when I revisited in 2024.

Trip to Seaside Town of Jummala
Jūrmala is a Latvian resort city on the Gulf of Riga, just west of the capital, Riga. When we visited there was a beach run and lots of people were milling around, walking the endlos beach, despite the chilly weather.
What really excited us were the art nouveau seaside villas, what we did not get to see were the famous Soviet-era sanatoriums.

Barikadas – reminding of Fight for freedom
In January 1991 lots of barricades went up in Riga. Latvia, which had declared restoration of independence from the Soviet Union a year earlier, anticipated that the Soviet Union might attempt to regain control over the country by force. The events are named for the popular effort of building and protecting barricades from 13 January until about 27 January.
