How a business trip to Tallinn ended in an epic train journey? With no meetings scheduled I decided to work from my laptop and took my time travelling back home to Vienna. In total I stopped at 14 places, covered 2119km in 13 days for the price of €265. This is the amount I spent on ALL the train tickets. train station in Tallinn is nothing to write home about, the ticket counter is squeezed into the corner of what seems a huge a Burger King Restaurant.
Estonia
From Tallinn I continued my journey by train to Narva, Tartu and Valga. Narva’s charm results from its unique geopolitical location – 200m across the river is Russia, you cannot get closer.
Tartu is home of the phantastic National Museum and happened to be European Cultural Capital 2024, the year I visited, which added many additonal attractions
Valga is nothing but a railway hub, but it was great to see a small town in Estonia.
Riding from Tallinn to Narva I passed through woods, woods, woods and accosionally a deserted train station or house hidden behind in the woods.
Latvia- Riga
The train ride Valga/Estonia to Riga took
Riga was the only place I visited in Latvia, I had been here in 2012 and for over a week and travelled to other place like the coast.
