First, do not be mistaken: you will not be able to disappear, even somewhere in South Bolivia or Papua New Guinea – We are in a wired world, like it or not! Most travelers are drawn into Internet cafés or hooked to WiFi, now a must in most hostels, or just scream in (or maybe at?) the Smart Phones, even in remote National Parks… Therefore, being connected is not so much the problem than being reachable all the time everywhere!
It is rather shocking to see how many travelers spend their evenings on FaceBook or checking eMails instead of talking to each other, cooking together and having fun.
That said, a few recommendation about communications:
- Consider buying a SIM-Card for you mobile phone in the countries you visit. This will help you a lot in organizing your trip, like booking accommodation. There are still many places where people don’t check their mail every minute.
- We travel with our computers, for various reasons. We organize our photos and write for our Travel Blog most evening. Besides it is the easiest way to find what you want to know. A tablet might be an alternative, if you only want to read / write mails and check information.
- Create a Skype account. This is a very cheap way to communicate with people back home and to make international reservations.
Do not underestimate the need to keep in touch with friends and family if you travel over a longer period of time. There is nothing we enjoy more than exchanges with fellow travelers, but sometimes you you need to have a more personal discussion…
